Sauce Salutes is a monthly post that pays homage to a Sauce fan for their accomplishments in sport, in life – or both!

At Sauce Headwear we know first-hand the incredible benefits of involvement in sport & a healthy, active lifestyle.

Headwear may be a small thing in the big picture, but we believe that anything that ‘enhances the flavor’ of an outdoor experience will help to encourage life-long participation in activities that promote self-respect and healthy living.

In sharing the stories of the Saucy people we find along our journey, we hope to spread a little inspiration & motivation – here’s a taste!

Sauce Salutes Michelle Grevenstuk…

1 In the letter you sent us, you mentioned that you run a LOT! Just for reference, what does that mean?
I run about 65 miles a week. For me that’s a lot of miles. I also spend a fair amount of time each day thinking about various running adventures. It’s pretty much always on the brain.

2 When did you start running and what brought you to the sport?
Running has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Whether I’m chasing my dog or trying to reach a finish line, running is my favorite way to get from point A to point B. Running allows me to see things I would miss otherwise. That’s always been the lure to running one more mile… just one more. So, that’s how I fell in love with distance running.

3 What does your training/physical activity regime look like? Structured, random, mixed with other stuff, running exclusively?
When I’m training for a race, I follow a plan. Some structure is good for me, but not too much. Sometimes playing tag with my dog sounds more fun than running 6 miles down the road, so that’s what I do. Variety is good, which is why I mix in short, long, slow and fast runs into my routine. I also incorporate strength work. I’m a landscape architect, so sometimes “strength work” includes unloading a trailer of plants. The majority of my training is running, but I’m always up for a hike or ride and love to x-country ski in the winter.

4 We all run for different reasons – What motivates you to keep running?
I truly believe running has made me a better person. Running has introduced me to beautiful places and beautiful people. It has inspired me, challenged me and humbled me.

5 You mentioned that you ran (and won!) the Black Mountain Marathon in NC, do you participate in a lot of long distance races?
Training for long distance races is a big part of my life. Just about every year I train for two marathons along with some shorter races and the occasional relay. I like a mix of trail and road races which are both very different experiences. Running trails is what I consider pure bliss. In my opinion, running roads is about gutting out miles which I also strangely enjoy.

6 When the going gets tough, do you use positive self-talk to keep going? If so, what is your favorite ‘I-can-do-it!’ mantra?
During every long race my brain, at some point, tells me “I just want to take a nap.” I’ve often surveyed the soft grass along the trail or road longing for a place to rest my weary body. Many long runs have prepared me for this mental low that I’ve come to expect. Staying positive is crucial to getting through these low points. I like to tell myself over and over that “I’ve done the work” which reminds me that I’m prepared for the event and can finish strong.

7 What are your passions in life? What are your passions in sport?
My passions in life and sport are similar. I love to be outside as much as possible. My goal as a landscape architect is to help people appreciate the outdoors, even if it’s a 1/2 acre lot. I believe that appreciation leads to a greater understanding and therefore a level of respect. I want people to take care of and respect this place. As a runner, I see all sorts of things I’d otherwise miss out on. Just yesterday, in the pouring rain, I saw three wood ducks, a pileated woodpecker, and dutchman’s breeches blooming. Maybe I’m a dork, but I know my simple observations have helped me appreciate my little corner of the world.

8 What are your tips for balancing a healthy lifestyle with every day life?
Living a balanced life is difficult, but I think doing something you enjoy and surrounding yourself with positive people makes a big difference. Running is what I do because I absolutely love it. In order to stay healthy (mentally and physically) I care about the little things, and the little things eventually lead to big improvements in both health and performance.

9 If you could share your life’s motto in one line, what would it be?
“Go with the flow!”

Wow, thanks Michelle! Wishing you all the best and many happy trails,
~Sauce

One of our test-team members for the prototype Skinny Headband was training for a half marathon at the time. She has always had a really hard time keeping headbands on her small head and they usually fly off a few times each run. We decided that she would be the perfect test subject.

Please keep in mind that this prototype is a bit wider than the actual finished product, but these photos will give you a good idea of why we decided to bring this to our customers.

The ‘Saucy Visor’ is a Sauce Headwear original! It’s unique, comfortable, functional and will meet the needs of Sauce fans everywhere. This hot topping will make you exclaim, ‘How did I ever live without this thing!’

Have you ever been out for a cool fall, or early spring run when the wind picked up and thought, “I wish my baseball cap, or visor would cover my ears!”

Have you ever had the uncomfortable experience of a burnt scalp (or face) after a day outside? Maybe you wished that you had brought a hat…
Well maybe YOU WOULD HAVE if your hat packed up small like the Saucy visor! (this image is actually the Saucy Visor’s cousin, Flight visor, but Saucy packs up almost this small!)

The Saucy Visor concept was designed around several key features:

- Packable, foldable design
- Easy to wash
- Optional head coverage
- Optional ear coverage
- All-season appeal

When a product has the ‘wear-it two-way’ benefit, it always requires a little explanation… These call-out tags (attached to each Saucy Visor) illustrate the recommend use of the hat.

Just wanted to share a couple of our favorite recent custom projects. These are great examples of our ‘Basic Custom’ program in action.

Tri-It multisport in Calgary, Alberta worked with us to put their logo on a variety of prints and products. We especially liked the way this purple turned out on the Aqua Holy Swift Toque!

Here’s another custom project that we completed for the Sigge’s Payak loppet in Whistler. We really loved the way that the colours in the logo complemented the Lava Flow Swift Toque!

Finally, we thought we would post this image for the Birch 2013, Saskatchewan/Manitoba Cup. Good luck to all the racers!

Here’s a clean and simple hat we did for Webskis.com in Bend, Oregon.

The Chippewa Valley Nordic Ski Team decided to go with the Shadow Cast Chill Toque for their team…We really liked the way that the red/black logo looked on the hat. Happy skiing to you all!

Not everyone wants a ponytail hole in their hat, but those of you who do have gotten through to us loud and clear!

We proudly introduce our Axis hat with the optional ponytail hole!

Below you will find step-by-step instructions on how to open the ponytail hole at the back of your hat.

Step 1: Identify the seam at the back of the hat that will open to make the escape for your hair.

Step 2: Pull it apart with your hands until you see the lower layer of fabric that you will be cutting open.

Step 3: Fold the back seam in half and pull apart to expose the lower layer – this is what you will snip.

Step 4: At the very bottom of the fold use scissors to snip a small hole in the lower layer of fabric.

Step 5: Unfold the fabric and insert the scissors into the small hole you just snipped.

Step 6: Please look at the image below that shows where the fabric can be snipped without damaging the hat.

Step 7: Extend the hole up and down the back seam. If you have thick hair or a lot of it, you may want to snip top to bottom. If you have a small pontail, you may want to start with a small hole and make it larger if necessary.

Voilà! You have just created an escape hole for your hair!
